He also founded the Mevlevi Order, a spiritual brotherhood. Today, his influence remains massive across the globe. Many call him the world's most popular poet. His translated works are enjoyed in many different languages. In the United States, he has even become a best-selling poet in recent years.

His life was shaped by movement and migration. Rumi was born around September 30, 1207. His family originally hailed from Balkh, a major center of Persian culture.

However, the advancing Mongol hordes forced his family to flee west. They traveled through various cities, including Baghdad and Damascus. When Rumi was 19, he settled in Konya. At that time, Konya was part of the Sultanate of Rûm in Anatolia. This region had recently been part of the Eastern Roman Empire. Because of this connection, he earned the name Rumi, which means "the Roman."

Education and family lineage were vital to his early years. His father, Bahā' al-Dīn Walad, was an outstanding Sufi and a scholar. Rumi was expected to follow his father's footsteps as an Islamic scholar. He was exposed to Sufi thought from his very early childhood. His father was also connected to the spiritual lineage of Najm al-Din Kubra. This background provided a strong foundation in Islamic Persian culture. This culture dominated the eastern lands of Islam during his time. It influenced many people, including modern Turks, Afghans, and Persians.

A single encounter changed the direction of Rumi's life. While living in Konya, he met a wandering dervish named Shams Tabrīzī.

Rumi and Shams became deeply connected. This bond caused Rumi to neglect his previous scholarly duties. When Shams mysteriously disappeared, Rumi entered an intense period of grief. This loss became the defining moment of his spiritual evolution. It also marked the beginning of his massive poetic output. Much of his emotion was captured in his work, the Divan of Shams Tabrīzī.

Rumi was a highly skilled multilingual communicator. His mother tongue was Persian, which he used for his primary writing. He also used Arabic as a learned language for study.

While living in Konya, he learned enough Turkish and Greek to communicate. He could use these languages to navigate the local markets. He even composed thirteen lines of poetry in Greek. This ability allowed him to exist at the intersection of different cultures. He lived in a region where Persian, Turkish, and Greek influences met.

His literary contributions are considered masterpieces of the Persian language. His most famous work is the Masnavi.

Some people refer to the Masnavi as a "Qur'an in Persian." Many Muslims in the Turko-Persian cultural sphere view it as one of the most important works of Islamic literature. It is often ranked second only to the Quran. His poetry was also influenced by earlier Persian poets like Attar and Sanai. Rumi expressed deep appreciation for these thinkers in his own verses. His work helped make the Seljuk court at Konya a new center for Persian culture.

After his death on December 17, 1273, Rumi's legacy grew through his followers.
