People called him the "King of Country Music." He was a singer and a skilled fiddler. He also played the harmonica and the jaw harp.

Roy grew up in Tennessee. His family loved music. His father was a preacher and a fiddler. His mother played the piano. As a boy, Roy would amuse people by balancing tools on his chin. He loved sports, too. He even tried to play professional baseball. However, a sunstroke ended his baseball career. While he was recovering, he practiced the fiddle on his front porch.

Roy became a big star on a show called the Grand Ole Opry. He sang with his group, the Smoky Mountain Boys. His voice was very clear. This helped him stand out on the radio. He also helped start a music company called Acuff-Rose. This company helped many other famous singers.
