Rotuma Island is the largest island in the group. It is a shield volcano. This means it was made by old lava flows. The island is long and wide. A thin strip of land sits in the middle. This part is called an isthmus. It connects the eastern part to a western peninsula.

The island has many beautiful reefs and beaches.

You can find many small islands near the main island. These islands sit inside a ring of coral reefs. Many birds live here too. Some birds are very rare.

People on the island raise pigs. They build many stone walls to keep the pigs in. These walls are called the Great Wall of Rotuma. Most Rotumans are Polynesian. They have a unique culture and language. While many live on the main island, many more live in Fiji. In 2017, there were 1,583 people living on Rotuma.
