It was built to see X-rays. X-rays are a type of light that humans cannot see. Many countries worked together to make it. Germany, the UK, and the US all helped.

ROSAT launched on a rocket on June 1, 1990. It was meant to work for 18 months. However, it worked for over eight years! It saw many amazing things. It saw comets and even the Moon.

It also found many objects like supernova remnants.

A supernova remnant is the cloud left after a star explodes.

The telescope had many parts. One part was an X-ray Telescope. It used mirrors to see the light. Another part was a Wide Field Camera. This camera saw even different kinds of light.

Eventually, ROSAT began to fall toward Earth. It moved through the air. It fell over the Bay of Bengal in 2011.

Because it had much glass and ceramic, some parts might have hit the ground. It was a great tool for learning about space.
