He was a pioneer of the paparazzi culture. A paparazzi is a person who takes photos of famous people. He was often called "Paparazzo Extraordinaire." Some magazines even called him the "Godfather" of this style of work. During his long career, he took more than three million photographs. He loved to capture famous people when they were not posing. This made his photos feel very real and spontaneous.

Galella had a very specific way of working. He did not use a studio with bright lights. Instead, he caught stars in natural moments. He often took pictures of people out of the spotlight. This meant he caught them with unplanned expressions. He even made his own photo prints at home. He used his own darkroom to develop his work. This allowed him to create the images he wanted to show the world.

His life began in New York City on January 10, 1931. His family had Italian roots. His father, Vincenzo, made pianos and coffins. His mother, Michelina, was a crochet beader. Galella served as a photographer in the United States Air Force. He worked during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. Later, he went to the Art Center College of Design. He graduated with a degree in photojournalism in 1958.

His career was full of big, famous conflicts. He had many legal battles with Jacqueline Onassis. A court even told him to stay 25 feet away from her. In 1973, actor Marlon Brando punched Galella in the face. This happened in Chinatown, New York City. The punch broke Galella's jaw and knocked out five teeth. He later sued Brando and won a settlement of $40,000. Other stars, like Elizabeth Taylor, also had strong feelings about his work.

Even with these fights, his art is very important. Many big museums show his pictures today. These include the MoMA in New York and the Tate Modern in London. The artist Andy Warhol said Galella was his favorite photographer. Warhol liked how he caught people doing "unfamous" things. One of his most famous shots is called "Windblown Jackie." Time magazine even called it one of the most influential images ever. Galella died in New Jersey on April 30, 2022.
