He wrote the lyrics for several landmark albums. These include *The Dark Side of the Moon* (1973), *Wish You Were Here* (1975), *Animals* (1977), and *The Wall* (1979). He also wrote the entirety of the 1983 album *The Final Cut*. This method of songwriting allowed him to explore deep philosophical and political ideas through music. His work often moved the band away from whimsical sounds toward more serious subject matter.
Many of the themes in Waters's music are rooted in his personal history. He was born on September 6, 1943, in Great Bookham, Surrey. His father, Eric Fletcher Waters, was a schoolteacher and a member of the Communist Party. During the Second World War, his father served as a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers. After leaving Pink Floyd in 1985, Waters entered a legal dispute over the band's name. The two sides settled out of court in 1987. He then focused on a prolific solo career. His solo discography includes albums like *The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking* (1984) and *Amused to Death* (1992). In 2005, he released an opera based on a libretto about the French Revolution. Waters is also known for his intense political activism. He incorporates radical political themes into his music and public statements. He is a prominent supporter of Palestine in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. He also supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. These views have made him a controversial figure. He has been sanctioned or banned by various entities, including the city of Frankfurt and the country of Poland.
