Roger of Lauria was a very famous knight and sailor. He lived during the Middle Ages and was a great naval leader. This means he was an admiral who led fleets of ships. He was born around the year 1245 in Lauria, which is in southern Italy. His father, Richard of Lauria, was a high official in Sicily. Later, Roger and his mother moved to Barcelona to live in the Crown of Aragon.

Roger was a master of sea battles. He used clever tricks to win against his enemies. Sometimes he would pretend to run away from a fight. This tricked enemy ships into chasing him. When the enemy became messy and disorganized, Roger would turn around and attack. He also used special soldiers called Almogavars. These troops were light and fast. They used javelins and daggers to move easily on moving ships.

His career included many important moments and victories. In 1282, he became the commander of the Aragonese fleet. He led ships to help the Aragonese rulers take control of Sicily. Roger won six major naval battles in total. On July 8, 1283, he won at the Battle of Malta. In 1284, he won at the Battle of Castellammare. He even captured a leader named Charles of Salerno during that fight.

Roger faced many hard times and changes in his life. He won a huge battle in 1287 near Naples. He had only forty ships, but he fought eighty enemy ships. Later, he had trouble with King Frederick III of Sicily. Roger lost his land and had to leave the island. He even went to England to fight for King Edward I. However, he eventually returned to Italy to fight more battles.

Roger of Lauria died on January 17, 1305, in Valencia. Even though he lived long ago, people still remember him. Many ships in the Spanish Navy have been named after him. One battleship was named the Ruggiero di Lauria. A new Spanish frigate will also bear his name. Some paratrooper units in the Spanish army are named for him too. His story shows how smart tactics can change history.
