He is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Federer was a versatile all-court player, meaning he could effectively play from any position on the court. He was known for a graceful style of play that earned him immense popularity among fans. For nearly two decades, he was a leading figure in men's tennis. He was part of a group called the "Big Three" alongside Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. This trio dominated the sport for many years.

Federer's technical skill was defined by several specific elements. He used a one-handed backhand, a stroke where the player holds the racket with only one hand while hitting shots on their non-dominant side. He adopted this style because his childhood idols, such as Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras, used it. He also developed a high level of hand-eye coordination through playing many different sports as a child. These included badminton, basketball, and football. His technique and mental calmness were heavily influenced by his coach, Peter Carter.
