Rodents belong to the order Rodentia, a massive group of mammals. They make up approximately 40% of all known mammal species.

This group includes familiar animals like mice, rats, squirrels, and beavers. They are found on every major landmass except for Antarctica. Humans have also introduced them to many remote oceanic islands. Rodents are incredibly diverse in how they live and where they reside. Some species are arboreal, meaning they live in trees. Others are fossorial, which means they live in underground burrows. Some are semiaquatic or even capable of leaping on their hind legs.

The most defining characteristic of a rodent is its teeth. Every rodent has a single pair of continuously growing incisors in both the upper and lower jaws.

These teeth are covered in hard enamel on the front surface. However, the back of the tooth is made of softer dentine. As the rodent gnaws, the softer dentine wears away much faster than the enamel. This process creates a sharp, chisel-like edge on the teeth. This constant wear is necessary to prevent the teeth from growing long enough to pierce the skull. Rodents typically have between 12 and 28 teeth in total. They lack canine teeth and possess a gap called a diastema between their incisors and cheek teeth.

Rodent anatomy is specialized for efficient feeding and movement. The masseter muscle is the primary muscle used for chewing. In many rodents, this muscle makes up 60% to 80% of the total muscle mass used for eating.

Different groups show different ways this system is organized. Sciuromorphous rodents, like eastern grey squirrels, have deep masseter muscles for powerful biting. Myomorphous rodents, such as the brown rat, have enlarged muscles that allow for both efficient gnawing and chewing. Hystricomorphous rodents, including guinea pigs, have larger superficial muscles. This setup may allow them to move their jaws further sideways when grinding food.

Rodents also possess various physical adaptations for survival. Many species have cheek pouches to store food for later use. In squirrels, these pouches are extensions of the mouth, while in gophers, they are separate structures.

Most rodents are plantigrade, meaning they walk with their entire foot touching the ground. Their forefeet often feature an opposable thumb, which helps them handle hard seeds and nuts. Some species have even more specialized movement. Flying squirrels use parachute-like membranes to glide between trees. Kangaroo rats use bipedal hopping to move quickly across the ground.

The history of rodents is a long story of successful expansion. Their fossil record begins in the Paleocene epoch in Asia.

During the Eocene, rodents diversified and spread across many different continents. They were even able to cross oceans to reach new lands. Before humans arrived, rodents were the only terrestrial placental mammals to colonize Australia. This ability to spread has allowed them to occupy almost every terrestrial habitat on Earth.

Rodents play vital roles in the environments they inhabit. Some are considered ecosystem engineers because they physically change their surroundings.

Beavers build dams that alter the flow of rivers and create wetland habitats. In the North American Great Plains, prairie dogs create large colonies of burrows.

These burrows help aerate the soil and improve water absorption in the grasslands. Other rodents help forests by spreading fungi spores through their waste. This helps plants and fungi form important symbiotic relationships.

While many rodents are helpful, some species can be problematic for humans. The brown rat, black rat, and house mouse are often considered serious pests. They can spoil food supplies and spread various diseases. Because they are so adaptable, they often thrive in urban and agricultural environments. However, the diversity of the order Rodentia ensures they remain a fundamental part of the world's biological systems. From the massive capybara to the tiny mouse, they are a highly successful group of mammals.
