Rock and roll is a high-energy genre of popular music.

It emerged in the United States during the late 1940s and early 1950s. This style is a hybrid of many musical traditions. It blends African-American rhythm and blues with gospel and jazz. It also draws from boogie-woogie, jump blues, swing, and folk music. Many scholars view it as the electrification and acceleration of Black musical traditions. This music created a new cultural landscape in America.

Performing rock and roll requires specific musical structures and instruments. The music relies on a dance rhythm with an accentuated backbeat. This backbeat is almost always provided by a snare drum. Musicians frequently use minimal chord progressions. A common example is the twelve-bar blues pattern. In early styles, the piano or saxophone served as the lead instrument. However, the electric guitar eventually became the centerpiece of the genre.

As the genre matured, the standard band lineup changed. Classic rock and roll often features one lead electric guitar and one rhythm guitar. The low end is provided by a double bass, also called a string bass. In the mid-to-late 1950s, the electric bass guitar became popular. Fender was the first company to mass-produce these electric basses in the early 1950s. Drum kits also became a standard part of the classic rock sound. This combination of instruments allowed for a louder, more aggressive sound.

The phrase "rock and roll" has a complex history. Originally, the term described the movement of a ship at sea. By the early 20th century, it described spiritual fervor in Black church rituals. A Welsh seaman named William Fender sang the phrase in the 1930s. Trixie Smith used the term in a 1922 blues recording. By the 1940s, the phrase appeared in rhythm and blues reviews. It was often used to describe upbeat, energetic recordings.

Disc jockey Alan Freed played a massive role in the genre's rise. Working in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1951, he played this music on mainstream radio. Freed is credited with popularizing the term "rock and roll." He helped introduce African-American rhythm and blues to a wider audience. This helped break down racial barriers in American pop culture. He led both Black and White teenagers to listen to the same music. His influence was so great that he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Radio innovation also helped the music spread quickly. In 1953, Todd Storz adopted the "Top 40" format in Omaha, Nebraska. This format played only the most popular records in a continuous rotation. This method helped promote artists like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard.

By the mid-1950s, these artists were household names. The music moved from local radio to an international phenomenon. This helped transition the genre into the broader style known as rock music.

Rock and roll had a profound impact on American life. It influenced fashion, language, and social attitudes. It was a major subject in movies, television, and fan magazines. Some historians note its positive connection to the civil rights movement. The music's widespread appeal helped connect different racial groups through shared culture. It was more than just a new sound. It was a shift in how an entire generation expressed itself.
