Finally, she completed her medical training with a Doctor of Medicine from McMaster University in 1977. In 1983, Bondar was selected as one of the first six members of the Canadian Astronaut Corps. She began her formal astronaut training in 1984. Her most significant mission occurred in early 1992. She served as a Payload Specialist for the International Microgravity Laboratory Mission, known as IML-1. During this mission, she flew on the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-42 mission.
