Robert Mueller was a lawyer.

He attended Parris Island and Ranger School. He said Ranger School taught him how to act without sleep or food. In 1968, he served as a rifle platoon leader in South Vietnam. During a battle in December, he rescued a wounded Marine under fire. For this act of bravery, he earned the Bronze Star.

Mueller later studied law at the University of Virginia. He earned his law degree in 1973. He worked in many different legal roles over the years. He worked as a prosecutor in San Francisco and Boston. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1990, he was the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division. In this job, he oversaw many important cases. These included cases involving the crime family of John Gotti.

In 2001, Mueller became the sixth director of the FBI.

He was nominated by President George W. Bush. The Senate confirmed him with a vote of 98 to 0. He started his job just one week before the September 11 attacks. Mueller led the FBI for a very long time. He served from 2001 until 2013. This was longer than the usual 10-year limit. Congress gave him a special two-year extension to keep leading.

In 2017, Mueller was given a very specific new job. He was named special counsel. His task was to lead an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He worked on this for two years. In 2019, he submitted his final report. After the report was finished, the office was closed. Mueller then resigned from his position.

Mueller underwent intense training at several locations. He attended Parris Island, Officer Candidate School, Ranger School, and Jump School. He specifically noted that Ranger School was very valuable. It taught him how to function without sleep or food. During the summer of 1968, he served as a rifle platoon leader in South Vietnam. On December 11, 1968, he rescued a wounded Marine during an ambush.

For this act of valor, he received the Bronze Star with a "V" device. He also received a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in April 1969.

After his military service, Mueller pursued a career in law. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973. He began working as a litigator in San Francisco. Later, he spent 12 years working in various U.S. Attorney offices. He investigated financial fraud, terrorism, and public corruption in Boston. In 1990, he became the U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division.

In this role, he oversaw several major legal cases. These included the prosecution of Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega and the investigation into the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. He also oversaw cases involving the Gambino crime family boss, John Gotti.

Mueller's most significant role began in 2001 when he became the director of the FBI.

President George W. Bush nominated him for the position. The Senate confirmed him with a unanimous vote of 98–0. Mueller officially assumed his role on September 4, 2001. This was only one week before the September 11 terrorist attacks. He led the bureau through a period of intense focus on global terrorism. He testified before the Senate regarding threats from various countries. In 2004, Mueller and other officials threatened to resign over a warrantless wiretapping program. They successfully pushed the president to modify the program to address their legal concerns.

Mueller served as FBI director for a very long period. Usually, the law limits a director to a 10-year term. However, Mueller was the only director since J. Edgar Hoover in 1972 to receive an extension. Congress granted him a special two-year extension. He served from 2001 until 2013.

His long tenure provided stability during a time of major changes in national security. He worked closely with many leaders, including President George W. Bush.
