Robert Andrews Millikan was a famous American physicist who changed how we see the world.

He was born on March 22, 1868, in Morrison, Illinois. Millikan loved to learn and eventually became a leader at Caltech.

He helped turn that school into a top place for research. He even won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1923. This prize was for his work on electricity and light. He was a very busy man who worked for many years.

Millikan is most famous for his oil drop experiment.

He wanted to find the charge of a single electron. An electron is a tiny particle that carries electricity. He used tiny drops of oil and metal electrodes. The electricity pushed the drops against the pull of gravity. By watching the drops, he found the charge was a specific value. This showed that electric charge comes in tiny, set amounts. This discovery was a huge step for science.

Millikan also studied how light works.

This is called the photoelectric effect. It happens when light hits metal and creates electricity. At first, Millikan did not believe Albert Einstein's ideas about light. Einstein thought light moved in tiny pieces called photons. Millikan spent ten years building special machines to test this. His own results ended up proving that Einstein was right. Even though he was skeptical, his hard work confirmed the truth.

Throughout his life, Millikan explored many different things. He was the first person to use the term "cosmic rays."

He thought these rays were new atoms being born in space. Later, scientists found that cosmic rays are actually charged particles. He also wrote many helpful textbooks for students to use. These books helped people learn physics in a new way. He even helped make buildings safer after a large earthquake in 1933. He cared about using science to help people stay safe.

Millikan's life shows how curious scientists must be. He started by teaching physics even when he felt unprepared. He studied hard to become an expert for his students. He worked at many places like Oberlin College and Columbia University. He also spent time studying in Germany at different universities. His work helped us understand the smallest parts of our world. Even his disagreements with other scientists helped move science forward. He passed away in 1953 at the age of 85.
