Robert was born in 1910. His family moved to the United States from Russia. When he was young, he loved magic. He used a stage name for his magic acts. He chose the name Robert Merton. He kept this name for the rest of his life.

Robert went to Harvard University. He became a great teacher at Columbia University. He spent many years teaching there. He also wrote many books about how society works.

He came up with many new ideas. He gave us the term "role model." This is a person we look up to. He also spoke about "self-fulfilling prophecies." This is when a belief makes something come true. For example, if you think you will fail, you might act in ways that make it happen.

Robert studied why some people break rules. He called this "strain." He thought people might act out if they cannot reach their goals. He was a very important part of modern sociology.
