Robert Coleman Richardson was a famous American scientist. He was an experimental physicist. This means he used tests to learn about the world. He spent much of his life studying very cold things.

He was especially interested in how liquids act when they are freezing. This work helped us understand the tiny parts of our world. His discoveries changed how we think about physics. He was a very important person in the science community.

Richardson studied a special kind of helium called helium-3. He looked at this liquid at extremely low temperatures. He used a tool called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to see how it worked.

This tool helped him study the quantum properties of liquids. He found something called superfluidity in the helium-3 atoms. Superfluidity is a special way that a liquid flows. It happens when things get incredibly cold. This was a major discovery for science.

His big discovery happened in 1972. He worked at the Cornell University Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics.

He did not work alone on this project. He worked with David Lee and a student named Douglas Osheroff. Because of this work, they shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1996. This is one of the highest honors a scientist can get. It showed the world how important their find was.

Richardson had a long path through many schools. He was born in Washington D.C. in 1937.

He went to high school in Arlington, Virginia. Later, he went to Virginia Tech. He earned a B.S. in 1958 and an M.S. in 1960. He then went to Duke University. He received his PhD there in 1965. He later became a professor at Cornell University.

Many different awards recognized his hard work. He won the Simon Memorial Prize in 1976.

He also won the Oliver E. Buckley Prize in 1981. In 1997, he received the Golden Plate Award. He was also a member of the American Philosophical Society. Richardson was also an Eagle Scout when he was young. He lived a life full of learning and discovery.
