His books have achieved massive global success, selling more than 300 million copies worldwide. Many critics consider him one of the greatest storytellers for children in the 20th century. He was also a poet, a screenwriter, and a wartime fighter ace. His literary legacy is marked by both commercial success and critical recognition. In 2008, The Times ranked him 16th on its list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

He also received the 1983 World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement.

Dahl's writing style is famous for its unique and complex emotional tone. His children's books often feature a darkly comic and macabre mood.

These stories frequently present villainous adult characters who act as enemies to kindhearted children. Despite these dark elements, his work maintains an underlying warm sentiment that champions the protagonists. For older audiences, he wrote short stories known for their unexpected endings. These collections include *Tales of the Unexpected* and *The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More*. His ability to balance darkness with warmth is a hallmark of his storytelling.

Many of Dahl's most iconic characters and plots originated from his own childhood experiences.

At age eight, he participated in the "Great Mouse Plot of 1924." He and four friends put a dead mouse in a jar of gobstoppers at a local sweet shop. This prank resulted in the boys being caned by their headmaster. This memory inspired the character of the cruel Miss Trunchbull in his book *Matilda*. Additionally, his experience testing new chocolates from the Cadbury company inspired *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*. These real-life details helped create the vivid, sensory worlds found in his fiction.

Dahl's early life was shaped by his Norwegian heritage and his education in England. He was born in 1916 in Cardiff, Wales, to Norwegian immigrant parents.

His first language was Norwegian, which he spoke at home with his family. After attending The Cathedral School in Llandaff, he moved to St Peter's boarding school. Later, he attended Repton School in Derbyshire from 1929 to 1934. His time at Repton was difficult due to an environment of ritual cruelty and physical punishment. He expressed deep disapproval of the way masters and senior boys treated younger students. These experiences with authority and cruelty deeply influenced the themes in his later books.

Before his career as a full-time writer, Dahl served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War.

He began as an aircraftman and underwent flight training in Kenya and Iraq. He eventually became a pilot officer flying the Gloster Gladiator, a type of biplane fighter.

During a mission in 1940, Dahl attempted to land in the desert after losing his way. The aircraft hit a boulder, causing a crash that fractured his skull and smashed his nose. He temporarily lost his sight due to the injuries. Following his service as a pilot, he rose to the rank of acting wing commander as an intelligence officer.

Dahl's bibliography includes some of the most recognized titles in modern children's literature. His works for children include *James and the Giant Peach*, *The BFG*, and *The Witches*.

Other notable books are *Fantastic Mr Fox*, *The Twits*, and *George's Marvellous Medicine*. His stories often explore the tension between small, clever individuals and large, powerful, or mean forces. This dynamic is a central theme that connects his various works. Whether writing for children or adults, his narratives remain deeply engaging and memorable.

The impact of Roald Dahl extends far beyond the printed page into various cultural spheres. His characters have been adapted into numerous stage and film productions. For example, *Matilda* has been adapted into a successful musical.
