It started in 1948. A man named Bernard Lewis began by selling fruit and vegetables. Soon, he started selling clothes too. His team even made their own designs. Their first design was a white blouse with lace.

In the 1960s, the brand was called Chelsea Girl. It became famous for mini dresses. These are very short dresses. Later, the company changed its name to River Island. This name came from a boat trip on the Thames river.

Today, the company is very large. They sell clothes for women, men, and kids. They even have clothes for pets! Most of their clothes are designed in West London. They have 250 stores in the UK. You can also shop online. They ship items to over 125 countries. The Lewis family still owns the whole company. They also help a charity called Newlife. This charity helps children who are sick or disabled. In 2021, the company helped reuse 850,000 items of clothing.
