It is the fifth-most populous state in the country. The state is also the ninth-largest by total area. It contains 497 different municipalities. The capital and largest city is Porto Alegre. This state is economically important to Brazil. It holds 5.4% of the national population. It is responsible for 6.6% of the Brazilian Gross Domestic Product, or GDP. The state also has the highest life expectancy in Brazil.

The geography of the state is very diverse. It is bordered by Santa Catarina to the north and northeast. The Atlantic Ocean sits to the east. To the south and southwest, it borders Uruguay. To the west and northwest, it borders the Argentine provinces of Corrientes and Misiones.

The land features two distinct river systems. One system drains eastward into large lagoons. The other system drains westward into the Río de la Plata basin. This basin includes the Uruguay River. The Uruguay River is formed by the meeting of the Canoas and Pelotas rivers.

The landscape changes as you move through the state. The northern part sits on an elevated plateau. This area has low mountain ranges that look like escarpments, or steep slopes. West of these mountains lies a vast grassy plain called the Pampas.

The Lagoa dos Patos is the largest lake in the state. It is about 496 kilometers long. It is also very shallow and filled with sand banks. This makes navigating the lake difficult. The Lagoa Mirim is also important. It sits on the Uruguayan border. It is about 250 kilometers long.

These two lakes are likely remains of an ancient coastline depression. They were shaped by wind and water currents. The waters are brackish, meaning they are slightly salty, near the ocean outlet. The Rio Grande serves as the outlet for these lakes. It allows ships to enter navigable inland waters.

Different types of forests cover the state. In the northeast, there are Serra do Mar coastal forests. These are evergreen tropical moist forests. The high plateau contains Araucaria moist forests. These forests feature the Brazilian Pine, or Araucaria angustifolia.

On the lower slopes, you find Alto Paraná Atlantic forests. These are semi-deciduous, so many trees lose leaves in the dry season. Along the coast, there are Atlantic Coast restingas. These grow on nutrient-poor sand dunes. The climate is humid subtropical.
