It is a long belt of volcanoes and earthquakes. This ring has 750 to 915 volcanoes. That is about two-thirds of all volcanoes on Earth. Most of the world's earthquakes happen here too. About 90% of all shakes occur in this belt.

This ring is made by subduction. Subduction is a way that parts of the Earth move. Large pieces of the Earth's surface are called tectonic plates. In the Ring of Fire, these plates crash into each other. One plate slides under another plate. This can happen under the ocean or under land. When plates slide, they make deep trenches in the sea.

This movement also makes volcanoes. Some volcanoes, like Mount St. Helens, are called stratovolcanoes. They make big, explosive eruptions. This ring has existed for more than 35 million years. It is a very busy part of our world.
