As of 2025, the city has 150,630 inhabitants. The surrounding province holds 340,665 people. This makes Rimini the twenty-eighth largest city in Italy.

The city's history began long before the Roman era. Etruscans lived in the area first. Later, the Celts held the land from the 6th century BC. They were defeated by the Umbri in 283 BC. In 268 BC, the Roman Republic founded a colonia named Ariminum.

This colony sat at the mouth of the Ariminus river. Today, this river is called the Marecchia. The Romans used Ariminum as a military bastion. It helped them conquer the Padana plain. It also served as a crucial road junction. The Via Flaminia ended here. The Via Aemilia and Via Popilia also connected through the city. These roads linked central and northern Italy. They also opened paths for sea and river trade.

Roman engineering left many lasting marks on the landscape. The Arch of Augustus was erected in 27 BC. It remains a prestigious landmark today. The Ponte di Tiberio is another major structure.

This bridge was completed in 21 AD using Istrian stone. It features five arches and is still visible. The Romans also built a large amphitheatre. This structure could seat 12,000 people. You can still see the remains of it. The ancient city layout was divided by two main streets. These were called the Cardo and the Decumanus.

During the Middle Ages, the House of Malatesta rose to power.

Rimini has faced many periods of destruction. In the 18th century, the city suffered from pirates and floods. It also faced earthquakes and famines. In 1916, two large earthquakes hit the region. These events caused the demolition of 615 buildings. Many historic churches were severely damaged. During World War II, the city faced even greater loss. It suffered heavy Allied aerial bombardment. By the time it was liberated in 1944, 82% of buildings were destroyed. This was the highest percentage for any Italian city with over 50,000 people. The Battle of Rimini was a very hard engagement. It was part of the fight for the Gothic Line. Over 10,000 soldiers died during this 37-day battle.

Despite these hardships, Rimini transformed into a famous resort. The first bathing establishment opened in 1843.

This started a massive change in the local economy. The seafront developed into a place of many small villas. The Kursaal became a symbol of its status. Today, the city is a top destination for international tourists.
