Richard Wagner was a highly influential German composer, theatre director, conductor, and essayist.

While he worked in many artistic fields, he is most famous for his operas. Most composers of his time only wrote the music for these stage productions. Wagner changed this by writing both the music and the libretti, which are the written texts or words for the singers. This allowed him to control every part of the artistic experience. His work transformed the way music and drama interact on stage.

Wagner sought to revolutionize music through a concept he called the Gesamtkunstwerk. This German term means "total work of art."

He believed that poetry, music, visual elements, and drama should be united into one single experience. In a traditional opera, the story often moves between different styles like arias and recitatives. Wagner rejected this pattern in favor of a continuously sung narrative. In his music dramas, the music evolves organically from the text. This creates a seamless flow that keeps the audience immersed in the story.

To help tell these complex stories, Wagner developed a system of leitmotifs.

A leitmotif is a specific musical phrase that is associated with a particular character, place, idea, or plot element. When a certain character enters or a specific idea is mentioned, the orchestra plays that unique theme. This technique provides a layer of musical meaning that the audience can sense. His later compositions are also known for their rich harmonies and complex orchestration. He used extreme chromaticism, which involves using many different notes, to push the boundaries of musical language.

Wagner's musical innovations had a massive impact on the history of classical music. His work Tristan und Isolde is often viewed as an important precursor to modernist music. He used quickly shifting tonal centres, which means the music moves rapidly between different musical keys. These advances influenced how future composers approached harmony and structure. Even as he matured, he occasionally returned to traditional forms. In his final works, such as Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Parsifal, he reintroduced elements like ensembles and choruses.

He was born in Leipzig on May 22, 1813, as the youngest of nine children. His father, Carl Friedrich Wagner, died of typhoid fever only six months after his birth. Wagner grew up in Dresden, where he developed a deep love for the theatre. He even participated in stage performances as a child. By 1831, he was studying composition at Leipzig University. His teacher, Theodor Weinlig, was so impressed by his talent that he taught him for free.

Throughout his career, Wagner faced significant financial and social challenges. He struggled with large debts that plagued him for much of his life. In 1849, his involvement in the May Uprising in Dresden led to a warrant for his arrest.

This forced him into exile in Switzerland. Wagner's personal conduct and his controversial views on politics and religion also caused much debate. Some people called him a genius, while others viewed his ideas as a disease. His antisemitism, in particular, remains a subject of intense discussion regarding his prose and stage works.

To fully realize his vision, Wagner required a very specific environment for his performances. He had the Bayreuth Festspielhaus built according to his own unique specifications.

This opera house featured many innovations designed to immerse the audience deeply in the drama. The theatre became the home for the premieres of his major works, including the Ring cycle. After his death in 1883, his wife Cosima took leadership of the theatre. Today, his descendants continue to manage the site. The annual Bayreuth Festival remains dedicated to staging his mature music dramas for audiences worldwide.
