His parents, James and Winifred, were writers and activists. His grandfather was a leader in the Social Gospel movement. Rorty grew up with a deep love for beauty and justice. He once wrote about the beauty of wild orchids in New Jersey. He wanted to combine that beauty with a dream of fairness on earth.

Many people used to believe that knowledge worked like a mirror. They thought our minds must create a perfect picture of the outside world. Rorty rejected this old idea of representationalism. He argued that knowledge is actually a linguistic affair. This means knowledge is tied to the way we use language. He believed that our vocabularies are temporary and change over time. Since humans create these vocabularies, Rorty said that humans also create truths.

Rorty's way of thinking led to a state of mind he called "ironism." An ironist is someone who knows their beliefs depend on their history. They understand their views are shaped by their specific time and place. This does not mean an ironist does not care about their ideas. Rorty said a person can still act on a belief. They might even think a belief is worth dying for. They can do this while knowing the belief is a result of history.

He had a very busy academic career at many great universities. Rorty studied at the University of Chicago and Yale University. He earned his PhD at Yale between 1952 and 1956. He taught at Wellesley College for three years after serving in the Army. Later, he was a professor at Princeton University for 21 years. In 1981, he received a MacArthur Fellowship, often called a "Genius Grant." He also taught at the University of Virginia and Stanford University.

Rorty wrote many important books that changed how people think. His book *Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature* came out in 1979. He also wrote *Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity* in 1989. These books explored how language and truth work together. He also looked at different ways of thinking called analytic and continental philosophy. He hoped these two traditions could help each other. Rorty died from pancreatic cancer on June 8, 2007. He left behind a legacy of wondering about how we describe our world.
