Richard Garfield is a game designer and a mathematician. He was born in Philadelphia. He grew up in many places around the world. He later moved to Oregon when he was twelve. Richard loves puzzles and games. He became very interested in games when he played Dungeons & Dragons. This helped him design his first game at age 13.

Richard is famous for making Magic: The Gathering. This was the first collectible card game. He got the idea by mixing card games with collecting baseball cards. He made the game so players could change their decks. This is like how players change characters in roleplaying games. Because of this success, he joined a company called Wizards of the Coast.

He has made many other games too. He designed board games like RoboRally and King of Tokyo. He also made card games like Netrunner. Some of his games are for computers. He even works on a game called MetaZoo.
