Imagine you have a very big, hard job to finish. You want to do it in the best way possible. Instead of looking at the whole job at once, you break it into small steps. You make a good choice for the first step. Then you look at what is left and make another good choice. This way of solving problems is called dynamic programming. Richard Bellman was the mathematician who introduced this idea in 1953.

It helps people find the most efficient path for many different tasks. This method is used in engineering and even in economics to help make decisions.

Bellman created a special math tool called the Bellman equation. This equation is a necessary condition for finding the best possible result. It is used in a field called optimal control theory. This theory helps people manage how systems change over time. There is also a version called the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation. This version is a partial differential equation used in continuous time. It helps find the best cost for a moving system.

Engineers and scientists use these tools to solve very tricky problems.

Richard Bellman was born in New York City in 1920. His parents, Pearl and John James Bellman, ran a grocery store in Brooklyn. He went to Abraham Lincoln High School in 1937. Later, he studied at Brooklyn College and earned a degree in 1941. He also studied at the University of Wisconsin. During World War II, he worked at Los Alamos. In 1946, he earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University.

He spent many years working at the RAND corporation starting in 1949.

Bellman was a very productive thinker. He published 619 papers and 39 books during his life. He also came up with a term called the curse of dimensionality. This describes how math problems get much harder as you add more dimensions. For example, adding dimensions can make a problem require much more computer time.

In 1973, Bellman had surgery to remove a brain tumor. This surgery caused serious health complications for him. Even so, he wrote over 100 papers in his final 11 years. He was a professor at the University of Southern California.

Later in life, Bellman focused on biology and medicine. He believed these were the most important areas of science. In 1967, he helped start a journal called Mathematical Biosciences. This journal is still very important for scientists today. To honor him, people created the Bellman Prize in Mathematical Biosciences. This prize is given every two years for the best research.

He also won the IEEE Medal of Honor in 1979. His work changed how we use math to understand the living world.
