geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Riau Islands is a province located in the western part of Indonesia. It consists of a massive group of 2,408 islands. Most of these islands are scattered between Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo. Out of this total, 1,798 islands have specific names. The province sits along some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. These include the Malacca Strait and the Natuna Sea, which is part of the South China Sea.

Because of its location, the Riau Islands share maritime borders with several countries. To the northeast, the islands border Singapore. To the east, they are near Malaysia and West Kalimantan. To the north, they sit near Vietnam and Cambodia. The province also shares water borders with Brunei. On land and sea, the islands are near Riau and Jambi to the west, and the Bangka Belitung Islands to the south.

The history of the region is deeply tied to maritime trade and powerful empires. Between the 7th and 13th centuries, the Srivijaya Empire controlled the area. This was a major maritime kingdom that managed trade routes along the Malacca Strait. You can still find evidence of this era in the Karimun Regency. There, researchers discovered Buddha's footprints, which show that Buddhism spread here long before Islam arrived.

Following the decline of Srivijaya, the islands became part of the Bentan Kingdom around 1100 AD. Raja Iskandar Syah was one of the most notable rulers during this time. Later, the region joined the Johor Sultanate. A major turning point occurred in 1824 with the Anglo-Dutch Treaty. This treaty partitioned the Johor Empire. The islands fell under Dutch influence, while other parts fell under British Malaya.

The Riau Islands eventually became part of Indonesia after the Japanese occupation and the Indonesian National Revolution. In September 2002, the islands were separated from the Riau Province. This made the Riau Islands Indonesia's third-youngest province. The capital is Tanjung Pinang, while Batam is the largest city. Batam has seen rapid industrialization since the 1970s as part of a free trade zone.

Today, the province is one of the most prosperous in Indonesia. As of 2011, its GDP per capita was the fourth highest in the country. It follows only East Kalimantan, Jakarta, and Riau. The Human Development Index was also quite high in 2018. The islands have a score of 0.748, which is the fourth highest in Indonesia. This prosperity comes from mineral resources, energy, and marine resources.

The population is very diverse and heterogeneous. People of many different ethnicities live together, including Malays, Chinese, Javanese, and Minangkabau. The economic growth has attracted many immigrants from other parts of Indonesia. Batam is also home to many expatriates from other Asian countries. About 80% of these expatriates come from Asia. Some Westerners from the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and the United States also live there.

There are several theories about the name "Riau." One theory says it comes from the Portuguese word "rio," meaning river. Another theory suggests it comes from "riahi," meaning sea water. A third idea is that it comes from the Malay word "riuh," which means crowded or frenzied. This might describe the busy nature of the Malay people in Bintan. The name became famous when Raja Kecil moved the Malay kingdom center to Ulu Riau in 1719.
