Legend says the island was born from Helios and the nymph Rhodos. Their sons founded the cities. During the Classical Age, Rhodes was a major trading hub. The Persians invaded but were defeated by Athens in 478 BC. In 408 BC, the cities united into one territory. They built the city of Rhodes as a new capital. An architect named Hippodamus designed its regular plan. 
Rhodes became part of Alexander the Great's empire in 332 BC. After his death, his generals fought for control. Rhodes formed a strong alliance with Ptolemaic Egypt. This alliance controlled trade in the Aegean Sea. The island became a center for science and art. It had famous schools for philosophy and literature. Great astronomers like Hipparchus studied there. Sculptors developed a style called "Hellenistic Baroque." This style was very dramatic. Artists from Rhodes even carved the famous Laocoön group. 
One of the most famous sights was the Colossus of Rhodes. 
Rhodes has a long history of changing hands between powers. In 201 BC, the island asked the Roman Republic for help. Rome intervened in the Second Macedonian War. This helped preserve Rhodian independence. Later, the Knights of Saint John ruled the island. They built strong defenses like the Medieval Old Town. This area is now a World Heritage Site. Today, the island is a top tourist destination in Europe. Visitors come to see ancient ruins and beautiful beaches.
