The Rhine–Main–Danube Canal is a long water path in Germany. 
Building this canal was a very big job. People finished the current canal in 1992. It cost about 2.3 billion euros to build. This was a huge amount of money.
To move boats over hills, the canal uses locks. A lock is a special chamber for boats. 
Some parts of the canal follow river valleys. It goes through the Altmühl valley. The canal also crosses the Franconian Jura mountains. The highest point is above sea level. It is the highest spot on Earth for big sea boats.

It struggled because it did not have enough water and trains were becoming popular. The Ludwig Canal was eventually abandoned in 1950 after damage from World War II. 
The modern canal was a massive project that took many years. Construction began in earnest after a 1966 agreement between Bavaria and Germany. It was finally completed on September 25, 1992. Building it cost about 2.3 billion euros between 1960 and 1992. About 20 percent of that money went to help protect the environment. The canal is 171 kilometers long and runs from Bamberg to Kelheim. 
This canal is a busy place for many different kinds of cargo. In 2010, boats carried over 5.2 million tonnes of goods through the waterway. They moved things like food, metal, stones, and even fertilizers. Many of these goods come from countries like Germany and the Netherlands.

To move large vessels across changing elevations, the canal relies on a system of 16 locks. A lock is a chamber used to raise or lower boats between different water levels. The canal features locks with lifting heights reaching up to 25 meters. Some of these locks are designed to be water-conserving. During a down cycle, these locks pipe the top third and the middle third of the water into side tanks. On an up cycle, these tanks are used to replenish the bottom and middle thirds of the lock volume.

It then follows the Rednitz valley from Fürth to beyond Roth. The path crosses the Franconian Jura mountains and joins the Altmühl river near Dietfurt. From Dietfurt to Kelheim, the canal follows the Altmühl valley.

The canal is a busy corridor for transporting diverse goods. In 2010, the total freight volume reached 5,211,918 tonnes. 
While the canal aids trade, it also presents ecological challenges. The waterway allows aquatic animals to move between Western and Eastern Europe. This can lead to invasive species entering new habitats. These species may compete with native animals or introduce new diseases. To manage water levels in the Main, Regnitz, and Rednitz valleys, water is diverted through the Altmühlüberleiter canal and tunnel. This complex system of locks, canals, and tunnels connects distant parts of the continent into one integrated maritime network.
