People have tried to connect these rivers for a very long time. In 793, Emperor Charlemagne ordered a canal called the Fossa Carolina to be built. Later, between 1836 and 1846, the Ludwig Canal was built for King Ludwig I of Bavaria. That old canal was narrow and had many locks. It struggled because it did not have enough water and trains were becoming popular. The Ludwig Canal was eventually abandoned in 1950 after damage from World War II.

The modern canal was a massive project that took many years. Construction began in earnest after a 1966 agreement between Bavaria and Germany. It was finally completed on September 25, 1992. Building it cost about 2.3 billion euros between 1960 and 1992. About 20 percent of that money went to help protect the environment. The canal is 171 kilometers long and runs from Bamberg to Kelheim.

The canal's route is 171 kilometers long, stretching from Bamberg to Kelheim. From Bamberg to Fürth, the canal follows the Regnitz valley, a tributary of the Main. It then follows the Rednitz valley from Fürth to beyond Roth. The path crosses the Franconian Jura mountains and joins the Altmühl river near Dietfurt. From Dietfurt to Kelheim, the canal follows the Altmühl valley.

While the canal aids trade, it also presents ecological challenges. The waterway allows aquatic animals to move between Western and Eastern Europe. This can lead to invasive species entering new habitats. These species may compete with native animals or introduce new diseases. To manage water levels in the Main, Regnitz, and Rednitz valleys, water is diverted through the Altmühlüberleiter canal and tunnel. This complex system of locks, canals, and tunnels connects distant parts of the continent into one integrated maritime network.
