In February 1921, Reza Khan led a large detachment of the Cossack Brigade toward Tehran. An artillery officer named Mahmud Mir-Djalali decided to disobey orders to fire on the troops. Instead, he opened the city gates to let Reza Khan enter. This event allowed Reza Khan to seize control of the capital. He forced the current government to dissolve. He then helped install a new prime minister named Zia ol Din Tabatabaee.

Reza Khan quickly became the most powerful person in the government. He served as the commander-in-chief of the army and the minister of war. People noticed that he held more real power than the prime minister. By 1923, he was appointed prime minister of Iran. This led the last Qajar monarch, Ahmad Shah, to leave the country. In 1925, the national assembly changed the constitution. This allowed the assembly to elect Reza Pahlavi as the Shah of Iran.

As Shah, he focused on building the infrastructure of the nation. He wanted to reduce the influence of Britain and Russia. To do this, he looked for new international partners. He worked with the United States and Weimar Germany until 1931. Later, he turned to Denmark and the First Republic of Czechoslovakia. He used the expertise of the Czech firm Škoda Works. He also used the Scandinavian engineering firm Kampsax. These partnerships helped him develop Iran's industry and military.

Reza Shah also pushed for cultural changes known as Persianization. He wanted to create a single, united nation. This involved promoting a shared Persian identity. However, this policy often suppressed different ethnic and social groups. He used forced detribalisation and sedentarisation to achieve his goals. He also clashed with the Shia clergy over his social reforms. These reforms changed many parts of everyday life in Iran.

His reign came to an end during the Second World War. In 1941, an Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran occurred. This forced Reza Shah to abdicate his throne. His eldest son, Mohammad Reza Shah, became the new leader.
