This era lasted for 53 years, from 1925 until 1979. The dynasty's reign ended when the Iranian Revolution overthrew the monarchy. This period is a major chapter in modern Iranian history. It shaped how the nation viewed its ancient heritage and its political future.

The dynasty began with the rise of Reza Khan. He was a soldier born in 1878 in Alasht, Mazandaran.

He was not part of the traditional aristocracy. In 1921, he led a detachment of the Persian Cossack Brigade. This force consisted of 3,000 to 4,000 soldiers. Under British direction, they reached Tehran in February 1921. This event was part of a coup d'état that helped end the Qajar dynasty. By October 1925, the Majlis, which is the Iranian parliament, deposed Ahmad Shah Qajar. On 12 December 1925, the Majlis declared Reza Khan as the Shah of Iran.

Reza Shah used the name Pahlavi to connect his rule to the past. The name comes from Pahlavi scripts used in the Middle Persian language. These scripts were used during the Sasanian Empire of pre-Islamic Iran.

The dynasty promoted a form of Iranian nationalism. This nationalism was rooted in the pre-Islamic era, specifically the Achaemenid Empire. Reza Shah initially considered making Iran a republic. He looked to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who had done this in Turkey. However, he abandoned the idea due to opposition from the British and clerical leaders.

After Reza Shah, his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi took the throne.

He became Shah in 1941 and ruled for 37 years. The political nature of his reign changed several times. From 1941 to 1953, Iran experienced a pluralistic period. This was a time when more political views were allowed. However, this changed after Mohammed Mossadegh was overthrown. The government then returned to authoritarianism. This meant the Shah held much more absolute power over the country.

The Pahlavi family used specific royal titles for its members. The monarch was called the Shah or the Shahanshah.

The heir to the throne was known as the Valiahd, or Crown Prince. The dynasty also had specific rules for succession. The 1906 constitution required the heir to be a male. He also could not be descended from the Qajar dynasty. Additionally, the Shah had to be of Iranian descent.

The dynasty's end came during the Iranian Revolution in 1979.

Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was deposed on 11 February 1979. This marked the conclusion of 53 years of Pahlavi rule. After the Shah was deposed, his son Reza Pahlavi became the head of the House of Pahlavi. The family's influence in government ended, but they remain a notable part of historical study. The transition from a monarchy to a different system of government was a massive shift for the nation.

Studying the Pahlavi dynasty helps us understand complex political shifts. It shows how military leaders can transform into monarchs. It also demonstrates how nationalism can be used to build a country's identity. The dynasty's focus on pre-Islamic history shows how leaders use the past to support the present. The history of the Pahlavis is a study of power, tradition, and revolution.
