Some volcanoes are still active. Socorro is the largest island. It has a high peak called Mount Evermann. It is 1,130 meters tall. Many animals live here that live nowhere else. These are called endemic species. For example, the Socorro dove lives only on Socorro.

They sit far out in the Pacific Ocean. These islands belong to Mexico. They are located south and southwest of Cabo San Lucas. They are also west of the city of Manzanillo. Because they are so far away, people usually reach them by sea. The trip from the nearest land takes about 26 to 30 hours. Some people call these islands Mexico's "little Hawaii" because they are so unique.

The islands are made by volcanic activity. Some of the volcanoes are still active today. For example, Volcán Bárcena erupted in 1952. The volcano on Socorro Island erupted in 1993.

The islands are spread out over a long distance. They stretch about 420 kilometers from east to west. The total area of the islands is 157.81 square kilometers. Three islands are close together and are called the inner islands. One island, Clarión, sits much further to the west.

Explorers found these islands a long time ago. Spanish explorers first saw them in the 1500s. Hernando de Grijalva found Socorro Island in 1533. Later, Ruy López de Villalobos saw them again in 1542. He was the first to see Roca Partida. The islands are named after a man named the Count of Revillagigedo. In 1861, the Mexican government gave the islands to the state of Colima. They once thought about using the islands for a prison. This never happened, but the islands still belong to Colima today.

Life on the islands is very interesting. Most of the islands have no people living on them. There is a small naval station on Socorro with 45 staff members. There is also a tiny group of nine men on Clarión.

Many plants and animals live here that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. These are called endemic species. The Socorro dove is one such bird. There are also special types of owls, snakes, and iguanas. The islands are covered mostly in tropical dry forests.

Today, these islands are very well protected. In 2016, they became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2017, Mexico made them a national park and a marine reserve. This helps keep the ocean and the land safe. The water around the islands is great for scuba diving. People go there to see sharks, manta rays, and whales.

The Revillagigedo Islands are a remote archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean.

This group consists of four volcanic islands that belong to Mexico. They are situated south and southwest of Cabo San Lucas. They also lie west of Manzanillo. Because they sit far from the mainland, they are part of the Neotropical realm. They are one of three Mexican island groups not located on the continental shelf. This group includes Guadalupe Island and Rocas Alijos. The islands are often called Mexico's "little Hawaii" due to their unique ecosystems.

The archipelago is shaped by intense volcanic activity. Some of the volcanoes remain active today. For instance, Volcán Bárcena erupted in 1952. The volcano on Socorro Island erupted in 1993.

The islands are spread across a wide area. They cover a total area of 157.81 square kilometers. They stretch about 420 kilometers from east to west. The islands are divided into two main groups. Three islands are known as the inner islands. These include San Benedicto, Socorro, and Roca Partida. Clarión is the outer island. It sits more than 200 kilometers west of the others.

Each island has its own specific physical features. Socorro is the largest island in the group. It has an area of 132.06 square kilometers. Its highest point is Mount Evermann, which reaches 1,130 meters. San Benedicto is much smaller, with an area of 5.94 square kilometers. It features volcanic cones like Montículo Cinerítico and Bárcena. Clarión has an area of 19.80 square kilometers. Its highest peak is Monte Gallegos at 335 meters. Roca Partida is a very small island. It covers only 0.014 square kilometers. This tiny island has a peak of 34 meters.

Exploration of the islands began in the sixteenth century. Spanish explorers first discovered them in the 1500s. Hernando de Grijalva found Socorro Island in 1533. He named it Santo Tomás. In 1542, Ruy López de Villalobos rediscovered the islands. He was the first to report seeing Roca Partida. The islands are named after the Count of Revillagigedo. He was the 53rd viceroy of New Spain. In 1861, President Benito Juárez gave the islands to the state of Colima. The government originally planned to build a prison there. This plan was never carried out. However, the islands remain under the jurisdiction of Colima.

The islands are mostly uninhabited by permanent residents. There is a naval station on the south of Socorro Island. This station has a population of 45 staff members. A small naval garrison of nine men lives on Clarión. Most of the time, no people live on the islands at all. Traveling to the islands is difficult and takes 26 to 30 hours by sea. There is a small military airstrip on Socorro. Because they are so far away, amateur radio operators treat them as a separate entity. This helps them receive specific awards for their radio work.

The ecology of the archipelago is highly specialized. Many species are endemic, meaning they live nowhere else on Earth.

The islands feature tropical dry forests. Common plants include Hopbush and Guettarda insularis. Mangroves grow along the seacoasts. The birds are especially unique. There are 14 endemic landbird taxa out of 16 resident landbird groups. Examples include the Socorro dove and the Clarión wren. The islands also host endemic reptiles like the whip snake and various iguanids. Even the ocean life is diverse. The waters are home to sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales.

Conservation efforts have increased significantly in recent years. In 1994, the Mexican government established a Biosphere Reserve. In 2016, UNESCO named the archipelago a World Heritage Site. In 2017, Mexico created North America's largest marine protected area here. This protection bans fishing, mining, and tourism development. This helps protect the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The islands serve as important breeding grounds for many seabirds. They also act as wintering grounds for whales. Protecting these remote waters ensures that these unique species survive for the future.
