Long ago, a big fight happened in China.

A long fight happened in China. Two groups fought for control. This was called the Chinese Civil War. One group was the Nationalist Party, or KMT. The other group was the Communist Party, or CCP. The CCP won most of the mainland.
In 1949, the KMT leaders had to leave. They moved to the island of Taiwan. This was a very big move. It is sometimes called the Great Retreat. Many people went with them. About 2 million soldiers moved to the island. Many regular people and refugees went too.
They brought many things to Taiwan. They brought gold and silver. They also brought old art and books. These items are now in the National Palace Museum.

In 1949, a major change happened in China. A long fight called the Chinese Civil War was ending. Two main groups fought for control of the land. One group was the Nationalist Party, also known as the KMT. The other group was the Communist Party, or the CCP. The CCP began to take control of most of mainland China. Because of this, the KMT leaders had to leave the mainland. They moved to the island of Taiwan to start over.
This big move is often called the Great Retreat. It began in earnest around December 7, 1949. Many different people joined this journey to the island. About 2 million ROC troops moved to Taiwan during this time. Many regular people and refugees also fled the fighting. They moved from places like Sichuan Province in southern China. This was a very difficult time for everyone involved.
Moving to a new place requires many tools and supplies. The KMT leaders used planes and ships to move people. They flew about 50 to 60 planes every day. They also used 26 naval vessels to help the retreat. Leaders worked hard to move important things like books and art. They also moved gold, silver, and money to Taiwan. These items helped the new government start to work.
Many special things were saved during the move. Scholars brought many books and important documents. They moved schools and colleges to the island of Taiwan. Some of these became famous places like the National Palace Museum. This museum holds many old and beautiful pieces of art. The KMT also moved gold to help the economy. This gold was used to help manage money in Taiwan.
Life changed a lot for the people on the island. A new type of money called the New Taiwan dollar was made. The island had been part of Japan for a long time. After Japan left, the ROC took control of Taiwan. The leaders had a plan called Project National Glory. They hoped to one day return to the mainland. They kept this goal as a top priority for many years.
The retreat of the Republic of China (ROC) government to Taiwan was a massive movement of people and resources. It occurred during the final stages of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Two major political groups fought for control of mainland China. The Kuomintang (KMT), the Nationalist Party, was led by Chiang Kai-shek. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was led by Mao Zedong. As the CCP gained control of the mainland, the ROC government fled to the island of Taiwan. This event is sometimes called the Great Retreat in Taiwan.
The conflict between the KMT and the CCP had a long history. It began with events like the Shanghai Massacre in 1927. The two groups sometimes worked together against Japanese invaders. However, they often fought each other during these years. For example, the New Fourth Army Incident in 1941 involved a KMT ambush on Communist forces. This destroyed much of the trust between the two sides. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the civil war entered its final phase. Both leaders wanted to control all of China for different reasons. Mao wanted to build a socialist society. Chiang wanted to maintain central government dominance.
The retreat happened in several stages as the People's Liberation Army (PLA) advanced. The PLA was the military force of the CCP. In early 1949, the PLA crossed the Yangtze River. They captured major cities like Nanjing and Shanghai. They also took Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Chengdu. By August 1949, the CCP controlled almost all of mainland China. The ROC government was pushed into southern provinces like Sichuan. Many ROC troops eventually fled to the island of Taiwan. This exodus began in earnest around December 7, 1949.
Moving such a large number of people required complex logistics. The ROC government used many ships and planes to move people and supplies. Between August and December 1949, about 50 to 60 planes flew daily. These flights carried fuel and ammunition between the mainland and Taiwan. The Nationalist army also used 26 naval vessels for the retreat. The migration included many different types of people. Approximately 2 million ROC troops took part in the movement. Many civilians and refugees also joined the flight to escape the fighting.
Scholars and leaders worked to save important cultural items during the move. They wanted to protect China's history and knowledge. Many colleges and schools were re-established on Taiwan. This included institutions like Academia Sinica and Soochow University. Important books and documents were moved to the island. The KMT also moved many art treasures. These items are now kept in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.
Financial resources were also moved to help the new government. Chiang Kai-shek secretly moved gold, silver, and dollar reserves to Taiwan. This mission was kept as a top military secret. Some believe 800,000 taels of gold helped stabilize the economy. This was important because the area had suffered from hyperinflation. However, some records suggest the gold was used very quickly. An aide named Zhou Hong-tao wrote that 80% of the gold was used within two years. This money provided funds and provisions for the troops.
Life on the island changed significantly due to these migrations. Estimates suggest between 900,000 and 1,100,000 people moved from the mainland to Taiwan between 1945 and 1955. The island's population before this was about 6,500,000. The ROC leaders had a specific plan for the future. They called it "Project National Glory." This plan aimed to regroup and eventually reconquer the mainland. The ROC continued this policy of using force for reunification until the 1990s. Today, the ROC still controls Kinmen and other islands near the Taiwan Strait.
