Reticulum is a small group of stars in the southern sky.

Its name means a small net. This comes from a reticle. A reticle is a net of crosshairs inside a telescope eyepiece. It helps people measure where stars are. You can see this constellation best from October to December. Most people cannot see it if they live far north.

Many people helped shape this part of the sky. Isaac Habrecht II first called it Rhombus in 1621. Later, a French astronomer named Nicolas Louis de Lacaille changed it. He worked at the Cape of Good Hope. He named it le Réticule Rhomboide after his telescope tool. This name later became the Latin word Reticulum. In 1810, William Croswell used these stars for a different shape. He tried to make it look like Christopher Columbus.

Astronomers officially recognized Reticulum in 1922. This happened during a big meeting called the International Astronomical Union. A Belgian astronomer named Eugène Delporte drew the official boundaries. He used lines called right ascension and declination. These lines were based on the year 1875. The new maps were published in 1930.

The stars in the net have many unique traits. Alpha and Beta are the two brightest stars. Alpha is also called Rhombus. One star is a Mira variable named R Reticuli. C. Ragoonatha Chary found this star at the Madras Observatory in India. The star Epsilon Reticuli is a binary system. This means it has two stars orbiting each other. One star is a white dwarf. This system is about 50 light years from our Sun. In 2000, scientists found a planet there.

Other objects hide in this part of space. Zeta Reticuli is a wide binary system. It is about 39 light years away. Both stars in that system are like our Sun. You might also find a dwarf galaxy here. It is called Reticulum II. It is full of heavy elements. There is also a huge group of galaxies nearby. It is called the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster. It is very far away.
