To define the area, Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte drew specific boundaries. He used arcs of right ascension and declination for the epoch of 1875. These official boundaries were published in 1930 in a work called Delimination Scientifique des Constellations. This publication was done at the request of the International Astronomical Union. These lines ensure that every star belongs to a specific, recognized area of the sky.
The stars within Reticulum have many unique scientific characteristics. In 1756, Lacaille gave ten stars Bayer designations from Alpha through Iota. He also labeled two different stars as Zeta. In 1879, Benjamin Gould added the star Kappa Reticuli to the list. He did this because he believed the star was bright enough to deserve a name. Only two stars in the constellation are brighter than visual magnitude 5. These are Alpha and Beta Reticuli. Interestingly, Alpha Reticuli has been given the proper name Rhombus as of September 19, 2024. 
Several specific stars in this constellation offer deep insights into space. The star R Reticuli is a Mira variable, which means its brightness changes. C. Ragoonatha Chary discovered this variable at the Madras Observatory in India. Another interesting system is Epsilon Reticuli, which is a binary star system. This system consists of a spectral class K2IV star that is orbited by a white dwarf. Based on parallax measurements, this system is located about 50 light years from our Sun. In the year 2000, scientists announced the discovery of a planetary companion orbiting the star Epsilon Reticuli A. 
Other stellar systems in this region provide different perspectives on our galaxy. Zeta Reticuli is another wide binary star system. Both stars in this system are similar to our own Sun. This system is located at a distance of approximately 39 light years. It gained some notoriety in the field of ufology. This is because Betty and Barney Hill, who claimed to be alien abductees, named it as the home of their abductors. Beyond individual stars, there are massive structures in this area of the sky. In 2005, astronomers discovered a type Ia supernova in the spiral galaxy NGC 1559. This galaxy is located within the boundaries of Reticulum.
Finally, Reticulum is connected to much larger cosmic structures. The constellation contains a dwarf galaxy known as Reticulum II. This galaxy is notable because it is enriched in r-process heavy elements. Even larger is the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster. This is a massive galaxy supercluster that contains many galaxies. It is incredibly vast, ranging from 700 million to 1.2 billion light-years from Earth. Studying this region helps astronomers understand both local stars and the massive organization of the universe.
