People have wanted a link here for a very long time. Ideas for a fixed path started in the late 1800s. In 1910, some people even suggested a railway tunnel. Later, in 1936, a group of firms proposed a motorway network. Many years passed with different plans and studies. In 1954, a group was picked to look into a bridge. By 1973, Denmark and Sweden finally agreed to build a link. However, an earlier plan was stopped in 1978 due to money and nature concerns. A new agreement was finally signed in 1991.

Building the bridge was a huge job that started in 1995.

Many people helped design it, including Jørgen Nissen and Klaus Falbe Hansen. A group called Sundlink Contractors won the job to build it. They used a giant crane barge named the Svanen. This crane was the largest in the world at that time. The bridge was finished in August 1999. It officially opened to everyone on 1 July 2000.

One option was a link between Helsingør and Helsingborg. However, planners decided to prioritize the connection between the major cities of Copenhagen and Malmö. The final design used a two-level approach. The ASO Group proposed a steel bridge with the highway on top and the railway below. This design was selected over a concrete bridge design that placed both paths on the same level. The construction involved many different contracts for access bridges and the main span.

Ideas for a fixed link across the strait have existed for over a century. In the late 1800s, people began discussing ways to connect the lands. As early as 1910, proposals were made to the Swedish Parliament for a railway tunnel. In 1936, a group of engineering firms proposed a national motorway network. Various government commissions studied the project through the 1950s and 1960s. A formal agreement between Denmark and Sweden was signed in 1973, but it was cancelled in 1978. This cancellation happened because of the economic situation and environmental concerns. A new agreement was finally signed in 1991 to move forward.

Construction began in 1995 and was managed by Sundlink Contractors.

The project faced several unexpected challenges during this time. Workers discovered 16 unexploded World War II bombs on the seafloor. They also dealt with a tunnel segment that was accidentally skewed. Despite these setbacks, the link was finished three months ahead of schedule. The official dedication took place on 1 July 2000.

The bridge is built to meet extremely high safety and engineering standards. It is designed to have a lifespan of at least 100 years. The structure must withstand high wind speeds of 61 meters per second. The piers are designed to withstand collision forces of 210 MN. The spans must also withstand forces of 35 MN from collisions. The bridge can handle fast passenger trains and heavy freight trains. It must also remain stable during earthquakes. These strict requirements ensure the bridge remains safe for all users over many decades.

To build such a large structure, engineers used specialized tools. One decisive factor was the use of the Svanen, the world's largest hammerhead crane barge. Because the Svanen had such a large lifting capacity, engineers could increase the length of the spans. They increased the spans from the original plan to 140 meters. This allowed them to use fewer piers, which helped keep the water flow through the Sound unaffected. The project also used the Eurocodes, which were then new European standards for structural design. This helped different subcontractors from many countries work together effectively.
