Republic of Pisa

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Republic of Pisa was an independent state in Italy. It lasted from the 11th century until the 15th century. The state was centered on the Tuscan city of Pisa. It became a massive economic powerhouse during the High Middle Ages. Pisan merchants dominated trade across the Mediterranean Sea. This success made Pisa one of the most important maritime republics in Italy.

Pisa grew its power through a strong navy and a large merchant fleet. In 1005, the city expanded its influence by attacking Reggio di Calabria. The Pisans also fought the Saracens for control of the Mediterranean. In 1016, Pisa joined with Genoa to capture Sardinia. This victory gave them supremacy in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Later, between 1030 and 1035, they conquered Carthage in North Africa. In 1051, Admiral Jacopo Ciurini conquered Corsica. These military actions helped establish Pisa as a major naval power.

The republic developed a complex system of government and law. In 1077, Pope Gregory VII recognized the "laws and customs of the sea" created by the Pisans. This helped organize how ships behaved at sea. Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV also granted Pisa the right to name its own consuls. These leaders were advised by a Council of Elders. This meant Pisa had much control over its own decisions. The republic also managed many territories through commercial farms and warehouses. These were located in seaside cities like Naples, Palermo, and Tunis.

Pisa held many special rights in foreign lands. During the Crusades, Pisan troops were among the first to take Jerusalem in 1099. They were led by Archbishop Dagobert. In the Byzantine Empire, the Emperor Alexius I Comnenus gave Pisans special trading rights. In the city of Constantinople, the Pisan quarter grew to 1,000 people by the 12th century. In many cities, Pisans enjoyed immunity from taxation. However, they had to help defend these cities if an attack occurred. They even formed groups like the "Società dei Vermigli" in Tyre to help with defense.

At its height, Pisa controlled several major islands. They held influence over Corsica from 1050 to 1295. They controlled Sardinia from 1207 to 1324. They also held the Balearic Islands from 1115 to 1184. The republic's territory changed often due to wars. On land, Pisa fought rivals like Florence, Lucca, and Volterra. They used a system of fortresses to protect their borders. Important strongholds included the Verruca fortress and the castle of Cascina. They also managed the Maremma territory through the Pisan counts of the Della Gherardesca family.

The decline of the republic began in the 13th century. A major naval battle occurred in 1284 at Meloria. This battle was fought against the Republic of Genoa. The defeat at Meloria marked the start of Pisan decline. Pisa lost its claims to Corsica. In 1299, they sold part of Sardinia to Genoa. Later, the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia took away more land. The republic became smaller and stayed closer to the coast. It struggled to maintain its former wealth and power.

The end of the Republic of Pisa came through political changes and sales. In 1399, the lord of Pisa, Gherardo Appiani, sold the city. He sold the city and the countryside for 200,000 gold florins. He sold it to Gian Galeazzo Visconti. However, this new control did not last long. In 1406, mercenaries occupied the city. They ordered that Pisa be annexed to the Republic of Florence. This ended the independence of the state. Many wealthy Pisan families, such as the Alliata and the Caetani, moved to the Kingdom of Sicily to escape Florentine rule.
