Changes in skin and breathing were also major milestones for these animals. Some advanced forms likely had a water-tight layer on their skin. This is similar to the protective covering seen on modern reptiles. Some animals, like certain chroniosuchians, even had dermal scales. As amniotes evolved, they developed keratinous scales and claws. These features made it impossible to breathe through their skin or absorb water through it. Instead, they had to breathe through their mouths and nostrils and drink water by mouth.
Reptiliomorphs represent a massive shift in how animals interacted with the Earth. During the Carboniferous and Permian periods, these animals began to move toward a fully reptilian lifestyle. Some, like *Archeria*, remained eel-like and aquatic.
