Renaissance art refers to the painting, sculpture, and decorative arts produced in Europe between approximately 1350 and 1620. This period emerged as a distinct style in Italy around AD 1400. It developed alongside major shifts in philosophy, literature, music, science, and technology. For art historians, this era represents the transition from the medieval period to the Early Modern age.

While the term "Renaissance" literally means "rebirth," scholars no longer view it as an abrupt break from medieval values. In many regions, Early Renaissance art actually developed in parallel with Late Medieval traditions.

The development of this art was driven by several complex social and cultural shifts. Humanist philosophy encouraged scholars to focus on present life and ways to improve the human condition. Instead of focusing solely on medieval religion, humanists like Petrarch and Erasmus questioned superstitious beliefs. This era also saw the rediscovery of lost classical texts regarding science, drama, and philosophy. Furthermore, the advent of movable type printing in the 15th century allowed these new ideas to spread to a broader public.

The rise of the Medici Bank in Florence also provided unprecedented wealth that supported artistic growth.

In Italy, artists focused heavily on the mechanics of naturalism and spatial depth. They utilized mathematical principles to master linear perspective, which creates the illusion of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Artists like Masaccio and Uccello worked to apply these scientific understandings to their paintings. Piero della Francesca conducted systematic studies of both light and linear perspective to improve his work.

Sculptors also looked backward to move forward. The architect Brunelleschi and the sculptor Donatello performed the first archaeological studies of Roman remains to revive classical styles. This classicism influenced painting and sculpture as early as the 1420s.

Italian Renaissance art can be divided into several influential stages and regions. The Proto-Renaissance in Italy, spanning 1280 to 1400, featured artists like Giotto. Giotto developed a naturalistic style of figurative painting that was much more lifelike than the traditional Byzantine style. The Early Renaissance in Italy began around 1401 with a famous competition for the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery. This competition included talented figures like Lorenzo Ghiberti and Brunelleschi. Later, the High Renaissance emerged from the foundations laid by these earlier masters.

While Italy focused on perspective and classical form, Northern Europe developed a different approach. Early Netherlandish art, occurring between 1425 and 1525, grew from medieval traditions like tempera painting and stained glass. Rather than using a strict framework of linear perspective, these artists focused on the meticulous observation of nature. They achieved this through the advanced use of oil paint. This medium allowed for incredible detail in textures and tonal variations.

Artists such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden became masters of this detailed style.

Specific individuals and patrons played vital roles in shaping these artistic movements. In Florence, Cosimo de' Medici set a new standard for patronage by supporting art independently of the church or monarchy. In Venice, a different heritage of achievement grew through the Bellini family and artists like Titian and Tintoretto.

Even the Papacy participated in these grand projects. Pope Sixtus IV commissioned a group of artists, including Botticelli and Perugino, to decorate the Sistine Chapel. These artists cooperated to apply advanced techniques in anatomy, foreshortening, and atmospheric perspective to their fresco cycles.

The significance of Renaissance art lies in its connection to the broader evolution of human thought. It was not just a change in how things looked, but a change in how people viewed their relationship with the universe and God. The movement integrated scientific knowledge, such as advanced mathematics from Islamic scholars, into the creative process. By combining classical antiquity with contemporary technical innovations, Renaissance artists created a lasting impact on global painting and sculpture practices. This era proved that art could be a tool for both scientific inquiry and philosophical expression.
