An ROV works using a long cable called a tether or an umbilical. This cable is different from a wireless remote control used on land. Radio waves do not travel well through deep water, so a physical connection is needed. The cable carries electric power, video, and data signals to the robot. Many ROVs use a tether management system, or TMS, to help. The TMS is like a garage that helps manage the cable. It keeps the cable from being pulled too hard by ocean currents.
