Red blood cells are the most common cells in your blood.

Their main job is to carry oxygen to your body. This is a very important task for all vertebrates.

These cells use a special part called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a molecule that holds onto oxygen. It also contains iron, which makes your blood look red.

When hemoglobin has oxygen, it looks bright scarlet. When it lets oxygen go, it turns a dark red color.

In humans, these cells are shaped like flexible disks. They are thin in the middle and thick at the edges. This shape helps them move through tiny tubes called capillaries.

To make more room for hemoglobin, mature human cells do not have a nucleus. A nucleus is the control center of a cell. By leaving it out, the cell can carry more oxygen.

Your body makes about 2.4 million new cells every second. These cells live for about 100 to 120 days. Then, your body recycles them to make new ones.
