After World War II, Poland's borders changed. New lands became part of Poland. These areas were once part of Germany.

People called these the "Recovered Territories."

This name came from history. Long ago, a ruling family called the Piasts ruled these lands.

Because of this, many felt the land was returning home. But by 1945, most people living there spoke German.

The change caused many people to move. Many German residents were forced to leave.

New people moved in to fill the empty homes. These people came from central Poland. Some came from areas taken by the Soviet Union. Others were Ukrainians moved by a plan called "Operation Vistula."

At first, there were not enough people. There was a shortage of workers and families. Over time, these new communities built new lives. The border between Germany and Poland was finally set in 1990.
