They chose that name because the liquid they used was very thick and viscous. In 1904, J. P. Bemberg made a version that felt just like real silk. This helped make artificial silk a popular product for clothing.

There are many different ways to produce these fibers today. The viscose method is the most common because it can use wood. However, the older cuprammonium method is now considered obsolete in the United States.

A newer way is the Lyocell process, which was developed in the late 1970s. This method was worked on by a team near Asheville, North Carolina. It is often seen as a better choice for the environment. In the 1990s, a company called Lenzing began making this type of fiber in Austria. By 2015, they were making a huge amount of it every year.

You can see the results of this science in the clothes you wear. When you touch a soft blouse or a smooth skirt, you might be touching rayon.

The most common way to make rayon is the viscose process. This method begins with processed cellulose pulp, which usually contains 87% to 97% cellulose.

First, the pulp is immersed in aqueous sodium hydroxide, also called caustic soda. This creates alkali cellulose. The material is then pressed to remove excess liquid and shredded into a "white crumb." This crumb is aged by exposure to oxygen, a process called depolymerization. Next, the crumb is mixed with carbon disulfide to create an "orange-yellow crumb." This is then dissolved into a thick, viscous liquid called viscose dope.

To turn this liquid into solid thread, the viscose must undergo regeneration. The liquid is filtered, degassed, and forced through a spinneret. A spinneret is a tool with many tiny holes used for extrusion.

The liquid enters a bath of sulfuric acid, which acts as a regenerating agent. The acid converts the cellulose xanthate back into solid cellulose. To ensure the molecules orient themselves correctly, manufacturers sometimes add zinc sulfate to the bath. This slows the regeneration process down. Finally, the filaments undergo drawing, which means they are stretched to straighten the fibers. The fibers are then washed to remove any remaining chemicals.

There are other methods for producing these fibers besides the viscose process. The cuprammonium method uses ammoniacal solutions of copper salts to dissolve cellulose. While this was used for a long time, it is now considered obsolete in the United States due to environmental concerns.

One company in Japan still produces this type of rayon. The third major method is the Lyocell process. This method uses amine oxide to dissolve the cellulose. It is more expensive than other methods, but it avoids using neurotoxic carbon disulfide. This makes it a more environmentally friendly choice for modern manufacturing.

A landmark patent for this method was granted in 1979 to Neal E. Franks and Julianna K. Varga. The brand name Tencel was later used by Courtaulds for this fiber. By 1993, a Tencel plant in Mobile, Alabama, reached a production level of 20,000 tons per year. By 2015, the company Lenzing had become the largest producer of lyocell, reaching 130,000 tonnes per year.

Understanding rayon helps us see the connection between biology and industrial chemistry. It shows how we can take the structural strength of plants and rearrange it into something useful for humans. The transition from the flammable nitrocellulose of the 1880s to the modern Lyocell process shows how science evolves.
