Raymond Poincaré was a central figure in French politics during the early 20th century. He served as the President of France from 1913 to 1920. He also held the position of Prime Minister three separate times. A conservative leader, he focused on maintaining political and social stability.

His life spanned a period of intense international tension and major global conflict.

Poincaré began his professional life in the legal field. He studied law at the University of Paris and joined the Paris Bar. At only 20 years old, he became the youngest lawyer in France. He even served as the Secretary of the Conference of the Paris Bar. One of his most famous cases involved defending the author Jules Verne.

Poincaré successfully defended Verne in a libel suit brought by a chemist named Eugène Turpin.

His political career moved quickly through various government roles. He was elected as a Deputy for the Meuse département in 1887 at age 26. This made him the youngest deputy in the Chamber of Deputies. He worked in the Department of Agriculture before holding several ministerial posts. He served as the Minister of Education, Fine Arts, and Religion. He also held the role of Minister of Finance during different cabinets. In 1902, he co-founded the Democratic Republican Alliance. This became the most significant centre-right party during the Third Republic.

As Prime Minister in 1912, Poincaré focused on strengthening France's international position. He wanted to prevent Germany from achieving "world power status" through its policy of Weltpolitik. He worked hard to repair the alliance between France and Russia. This relationship had been damaged by the Bosnian Crisis of 1908 and the Agadir Crisis of 1911.

Poincaré visited Russia in 1912 and 1914 to meet with Tsar Nicholas II. He believed that a strong Franco-Russian alliance would deter Germany from starting a war.

Poincaré's foreign policy was guided by the Roman principle, "si vis pacem, para bellum." This means "if you want peace, prepare for war." He believed France needed to be strong to prevent conflict. At the time, Germany had 70 million people, while France had about 40 million. The German economy was also three times larger than the French economy. Because of this, Poincaré rejected any plan that would make France a junior partner to Germany. He preferred the Triple Entente, which treated France and Russia as equal powers.

His leadership during World War I earned him the nickname "Le Lion."

However, his political life was marked by a fierce rivalry with Georges Clemenceau. The two men were bitter enemies for much of their careers. After the war, Poincaré's reputation became more controversial in the English-speaking world. Some people called him "Poincaré-la-Guerre" because they felt his policies contributed to the war. In 1923, he ordered the Occupation of the Ruhr to ensure Germany paid its reparations.

Poincaré returned to power as Prime Minister again in 1922. He later served a third term from 1926 to 1929.

Even as his political influence changed, he remained a respected figure in international circles. He was an International Member of the American Philosophical Society. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He died on October 15, 1934, leaving behind a complex legacy of stability and firmness.
