Today, the river faces some serious problems with pollution. In urban areas like Lahore, the water can be very dirty. This happens because of wastewater from factories and farms. Some parts of the river have high levels of metals and medicine residues. Scientists have found things like caffeine and paracetamol in the water. Because the river flows through two different countries, both India and Pakistan must work together. In 2006, a special program was started to help fix these issues.

Today, the river is vital for electricity and farming. The hydropower potential of the Ravi system is estimated at 2,294 MW. Currently, 1,638 MW has been harnessed. Several projects generate this power. The Baira Suil project provides 198 MW. The Chamera-I project provides 540 MW. The Ranjitsagar Multipurpose Project provides 600 MW. The Chamera-II project provides 300 MW. The Ranjit Sagar Dam is a large multipurpose project. It was approved for construction in 1982. This dam helps with irrigation, power, and flood control. It has a gross irrigation potential of 300,000 hectares. The dam is a high earth gravel shell dam.
The management of the river involves international treaties. The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 allocates the waters of the Ravi to India. This treaty includes the Sutlej and Beas rivers. In Pakistan, the Indus Basin Project helps replenish the Ravi's waters. This project transfers water from western rivers to the Ravi. The river is also famous in Pakistan. It is called "The river of Lahore" because Lahore sits on its eastern bank.
Despite its importance, the Ravi faces serious environmental challenges. The river suffers from very high pollution levels in urban areas. In Lahore, industrial and agricultural wastewater is often disposed of carelessly. This creates heavy contamination in the water and sediment. Scientists have detected metals like cadmium, chromium, platinum, and copper. The river is also described as highly contaminated with pharmaceutical residues. These include paracetamol, nicotine, caffeine, and medications for diabetes. Because the river is transboundary, both nations must address these issues. A special program was launched in 2006 to help manage this problem.
