The river starts high in the Himalayas. It rises in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. In these high places, the river flows through steep gorges. The water moves over rocks and boulders in its early reaches. Most of the water comes from melting snow. Many smaller rivers join the Ravi as it moves. The Budhil River rises near the Manimahesh Lake.

People have known about this river for a very long time. In ancient times, the Vedas referred to it by different names. It was called Purushni or Irawati in Vedic times. The Ancient Greeks called the river Hydraotes. History tells us that a famous battle called the Battle of the Ten Kings happened on this river.

In the years between 1858 and 1860, people looked at the Budhil valley for its many trees. Some of these forests were kept sacred and protected.

The river is very important for making electricity and growing food. Many projects have been built to use its power. The Chamera-I dam was finished in 1994. There is also the big Ranjit Sagar Dam. This dam helps with irrigation and power. The river is also known as "the river of Lahore" in Pakistan. This is because the city of Lahore sits on its eastern bank.

Today, the river faces some serious problems with pollution. In urban areas like Lahore, the water can be very dirty. This happens because of wastewater from factories and farms. Some parts of the river have high levels of metals and medicine residues. Scientists have found things like caffeine and paracetamol in the water. Because the river flows through two different countries, both India and Pakistan must work together. In 2006, a special program was started to help fix these issues.

The river is one of five major rivers in the Punjab region.

The river begins high in the Himalayas. It rises in the Multhan tehsil of the Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, India. The river is perennial, meaning it flows all year round. It is the smallest of the five Punjab rivers that rise from glacier fields. These fields sit at an elevation of 4,000 meters on the southern side of the Mid Himalayas. In its early reaches, the river flows through steep gorges. The river bed is often filled with scattered boulders. Because this region lies in a rain shadow, the river is mostly fed by snowmelt.

Several important tributaries join the Ravi as it travels downstream. The Budhil River is one of the first major tributaries to join. It rises in the Lahul range of hills. The Budhil is sourced from the Manimahesh Lake and Manimahesh Kailash Peak. Both of these locations are important Hindu pilgrimage sites.

Another tributary is the Nai River. It rises at the Kali Debi pass and flows for 32 kilometers. The Seul River also joins the Ravi just below the old capital of Chamba. The Seul valley is known for fertile terraces called "the garden of Chamba." These terraces grow grains for the capital region and Dalhousie. Near Basohli, the Seva River joins the Ravi from the Jammu region. The Ujh River is another major tributary. It rises in the Kailash mountains at 3,000 meters. It flows for 115 kilometers before joining the Ravi at Nainkot in Pakistan.

The Ravi has a long history in ancient texts. According to the Vedas, the river was known as Purushni or Irawati. The Ancient Greeks referred to the river as Hydraotes. Historical records suggest that part of the Battle of the Ten Kings was fought on this river. During the English period, people exploited the river valleys for timber. For example, the Raja of Bharmour once considered the Budhil valley a source of Deodar trees. However, some forest areas near temples were declared sacred and reserved. In the late 1800s, the river was a site for early infrastructure.

Today, the river is vital for electricity and farming. The hydropower potential of the Ravi system is estimated at 2,294 MW. Currently, 1,638 MW has been harnessed. Several projects generate this power. The Baira Suil project provides 198 MW. The Chamera-I project provides 540 MW. The Ranjitsagar Multipurpose Project provides 600 MW. The Chamera-II project provides 300 MW. The Ranjit Sagar Dam is a large multipurpose project. It was approved for construction in 1982. This dam helps with irrigation, power, and flood control. It has a gross irrigation potential of 300,000 hectares. The dam is a high earth gravel shell dam.

The management of the river involves international treaties. The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 allocates the waters of the Ravi to India. This treaty includes the Sutlej and Beas rivers. In Pakistan, the Indus Basin Project helps replenish the Ravi's waters. This project transfers water from western rivers to the Ravi. The river is also famous in Pakistan. It is called "The river of Lahore" because Lahore sits on its eastern bank.

Despite its importance, the Ravi faces serious environmental challenges. The river suffers from very high pollution levels in urban areas. In Lahore, industrial and agricultural wastewater is often disposed of carelessly. This creates heavy contamination in the water and sediment. Scientists have detected metals like cadmium, chromium, platinum, and copper. The river is also described as highly contaminated with pharmaceutical residues. These include paracetamol, nicotine, caffeine, and medications for diabetes. Because the river is transboundary, both nations must address these issues. A special program was launched in 2006 to help manage this problem.
