A rapier is a long and slender sword.

It was very popular in Europe during the 1500s and 1600s. Many people used it as a sign of being a gentleman. It was also used for self-defense and dueling. The name comes from the Spanish language.

The rapier has a special design. It has a long blade with a sharp point. This sword is made to perform quick thrusts. A thrust is a fast poke with the tip. While it can cut a little, it is not meant for heavy slashing. The blade is much thinner than a longsword.

The hilt is the part you hold. It has complex parts to protect your hand. Some hilts have metal rings or plates. These parts stop an opponent's blade from hitting your fingers. A large pommel sits at the very end. This heavy part helps balance the long blade.

People often used a second tool for help. They might use a buckler, which is a small round shield. Many people used a parrying dagger. This helped them defend themselves at close range. Today, people still use rapiers in films and stage combat.
