The first rangefinder camera to be sold was the 3A Kodak Autographic Special in 1916. Later, the Leica I helped make accessory rangefinders very popular in 1925. By 1932, the Leica II and the Zeiss Contax I became great successes. These were important because they used 35 mm film. Rangefinder cameras were very common from the 1930s all the way until the 1970s.

Many famous companies have made these cameras over the years. Oskar Barnack developed the Leica screwmount cameras for Ernst Leitz Wetzlar.

Earlier models often featured separate windows for the viewfinder and the rangefinder. Later designs integrated the rangefinder directly into the viewfinder for easier use. Modern rangefinder cameras are often "coupled" to the focusing mechanism. This means that as the two images in the rangefinder fuse together, the lens automatically moves to the correct focus position. This coupling creates a direct link between the distance measurement and the physical position of the lens.

Rangefinder cameras have a rich history spanning over a century. The first rangefinders, sometimes called telemeters, appeared during the twentieth century. This makes them excellent for candid street photography or theater photography where being unobtrusive is vital. The absence of a mirror also allows lens designers to create high-quality, wide-angle lenses more easily. For example, the Voigtländer 12 mm lens offers a 121-degree angle of view. However, the design faces a challenge called parallax error. This occurs because the viewfinder is offset from the taking lens.

At close distances, the view in the viewfinder may not perfectly match what the lens records. To manage this, advanced models use brightline frames that move during focusing to help correct the error.

Rangefinder cameras also face limitations regarding lens types and magnification. The design is not easily adapted for use with zoom lenses, which have a continuously changing field of view. The only true zoom lens for these cameras is the Contax G2 Carl Zeiss 35–70 mm Vario-Sonnar T* lens, which includes a built-in zoom viewfinder. Additionally, large lenses can sometimes block a portion of the view within the viewfinder. This often forces designers to create smaller lens housings. While SLRs are better suited for extreme telephoto and macro photography due to their through-the-lens viewing, rangefinder users often use a technique called "zone focusing" to capture rapid shots.

The transition from film to digital has changed how distance is measured. Most modern digital cameras use electroacoustic or electronic means to focus automatically. While this is not usually called "rangefinding," it serves a similar purpose. The first digital rangefinder was the Epson R-D1, released in 2004 through a collaboration with Cosina. Since then, Leica has produced several digital M-series models, such as the M8 and the M11. Some modern manufacturers, like the French firm Pixii SAS, continue to produce true mechanical digital rangefinders. These devices maintain compatibility with classic lens mounts, bridging the gap between historical mechanical precision and modern digital imaging.
