He was born in Germany in 1922 as Rudolf Heinrich Baer. His family moved to New York City in 1938. This move happened because they feared persecution in Germany. Baer grew up to be a very skilled engineer. He worked on many different electronic tools and machines. His work helped start the massive video game industry we know today.

Baer had a big idea while working at Sanders Associates. In 1966, he wondered if people could play games on a television. He wrote a four-page plan to explain this idea. His boss gave him $2,500 and two other engineers to help. They built a prototype called the "Brown Box."

They used brown tape to make the units look like wood. This machine was the blueprint for the first home video game console. It eventually became the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972.

Baer's journey into electronics was very hard work. He was self-taught for a long time. He once worked in a factory for only twelve dollars a week. He later studied at the National Radio Institute in 1940. After World War II, he earned a degree in Television Engineering.

Baer's journey began in Pirmasens, Germany, in 1922. Born Rudolf Heinrich Baer, he grew up in a Jewish family. Due to anti-Jewish legislation in Nazi Germany, he was expelled from school at age 14. Fearing persecution, his family moved to New York City in 1938. This move occurred just two months before Kristallnacht. In America, Baer was largely self-taught. He worked in a factory for twelve dollars a week before studying electronics. He graduated from the National Radio Institute in 1940 as a radio service technician.

After serving in military intelligence during World War II, Baer pursued higher education. He used the G.I. Bill to attend the American Television Institute of Technology in Chicago. In 1949, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Television Engineering. This degree was quite unique at that time. He worked for several companies, including Wappler, Inc. and Loral Electronics. He eventually joined Sanders Associates in Nashua, New Hampshire, in 1956. At Sanders, he oversaw about 500 engineers developing military electronic systems.

It was at Sanders Associates that Baer developed his most famous concept. In 1966, he began exploring ways to play games on a television screen. He noticed that television sets were becoming much cheaper to own. He believed this created a large market for new uses of the screen. Baer wrote a four-page proposal to pitch his idea. His employer provided $2,500 and two engineers, Bill Harrison and Bill Rusch. Together, they developed a prototype known as the "Brown Box."

The Brown Box served as the blueprint for the first commercial home console. Baer sought a buyer for his invention for several years. In 1971, the technology was licensed to Magnavox. He co-developed the electronic pattern-matching game Simon in 1978. He also created a similar game called Maniac in 1979.
