His life was marked by significant transitions between different countries and cities. In 1974, he moved to Pune, India, where he established an ashram. This center offered various therapies influenced by the Human Potential Movement. By the late 1970s, the movement faced tension with the Indian government. There, they established a large commune called Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon.
The period in the United States was characterized by intense legal and social conflict. The movement faced many legal battles regarding the construction of the ashram. Conflict also arose between the commune and local county residents. In 1985, Rajneesh requested that authorities investigate his personal secretary, Ma Anand Sheela. She and several supporters were later convicted of various crimes. These included a mass food-poisoning attack in 1984 intended to influence local elections. Other charges involved an attempted murder of a physician and the bugging of Rajneesh's quarters.
