These rivers typically remain dry outside of the monsoon months. The monsoon season occurs from July to September. Rajkot is the fourth-largest city in Gujarat. It follows Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara in size. As of 2021, the metropolitan area had over 2 million people. It is also recognized as the 22nd fastest-growing urban area globally.

The geography of the city is defined by its position on the Kathiawar peninsula. Rajkot serves as the administrative headquarters for the Rajkot district. The district is bordered by several other regions. To the east lies Botad, while Surendranagar is to the north. Junagadh and Amreli border the south. Morbi is located to the northwest. Jamnagar sits to the west, and Porbandar is to the southwest. The city covers a total area of 170 square kilometers. The average elevation of the land is 128 meters.

Rajkot experiences a hot semi-arid climate, known scientifically as Köppen BSh. This means the weather has distinct seasonal patterns. Summers are hot and dry from mid-March to mid-June. During this time, temperatures can reach between 35°C and 45°C. The monsoon season brings rain from mid-June to October. Rainfall amounts vary greatly from year to year. For example, 1911 and 1939 saw very little rain. Conversely, 1878 and 1959 saw much higher amounts. Winters from November to February are mild and pleasant. Temperatures usually range between 10°C and 30°C with low humidity.

The history of Rajkot began in 1612. It was founded by Thakur Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja. He was a member of the Jadeja Rajput clan. The name "Rajkot" comes from two specific words. "Raj" means royalty or king. "Kot" means fort. Therefore, Rajkot translates to "King's Fort." The city later became a significant administrative hub. Under British rule, it was the headquarters for the Kathiawar Agency. It also served as the capital for the Western India States Agency. Following India's independence in 1947, the state acceded to the Indian Union. It served as the capital of Saurashtra State from 1948 to 1956. It later became part of Gujarat in 1960.

Demographics show a diverse and literate population. According to the 2011 Census, the city had 1,390,640 residents. The literacy rate is 82.20%, which is higher than the national average. The population is 52.43% male and 47.47% female. Most residents are Hindu, making up 89.90% of the population. Islam is the second-largest religion at 7.68%. Jains make up 1.90% of the people. Gujarati is the primary language for 94.60% of the population. Hindi is the first language for 2.71% of residents. The city is known as "Rangilu Rajkot," meaning "Colourful Rajkot."

Culture and landmarks provide much of the city's character. The city is often called "Chitranagri," or the City of Paintings. Historical sites include the Jubilee Garden and Connaught Hall. The Mahatma Gandhi Museum is located at the former Mohandas Gandhi High School. Another unique site is the Rotary Dolls Museum. This museum holds over 1,400 dolls from around the world. It is even listed in the Limca Book of Records. Religious landmarks include the Swaminarayan Temple.
