In 1954, a streamlined radio-controlled vehicle won third prize in the Ford Motor Company's Industrial Arts Awards. By 1955, Ford designers used radio control to test 3/8 scale models of futuristic cars like the LaTosca and the Mexico. These models used parts from Ford's own inventory, such as six-volt batteries and convertible top motors. The radio systems even operated functional headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. This allowed designers to save money and reduce the time needed to develop new car designs.

Individual inventors also made massive contributions to the hobby. In the early 1960s, Bill Johnson built a sophisticated 1:12 scale metal race car from scratch.

He used a Veco .19 engine and a 6:1 gear ratio to reach speeds between 6 and 29 miles per hour. Johnson used leaf springs in his suspension to reduce jolts on rough surfaces. Around the same time, Ken Balz built an electric 1:8 scale car using a Monogram plastic kit and nickel-cadmium batteries. His steering was proportional, meaning the amount of turn depended on the input, but his drive system was a simple single-speed sequence.

Another pioneer, Chuck Eckles, developed highly detailed models in 1965. He initially built a 1:8 scale Jaguar E-Type with a stainless-steel chassis. After finding the plastic body too fragile, he created more durable vacuum-formed bodies using a plaster plug master. His redesigned Mustang model used a Cox Medallion .15 engine and reached a top speed of 35 miles per hour. The vehicle was 11 inches long and weighed 3.5 pounds. He utilized a rack and pinion steering system along with an independent front suspension to improve performance.

The transition to commercial products helped make RC cars accessible to the public. In 1955, the Japanese company Masudaya launched the "Radicon Radio Control" bus, which was marketed as the first complete radio-remote control toy.
