Some RC cars use electric power. These cars use batteries. They are often easy to work with. Other models use fuel. These are called nitro cars. They use small engines. They run on a mix of nitromethane, methanol, and oil. 
Nitro fuel can be dangerous. It can cause blindness if it gets in your eyes. Large models may use gasoline engines. These are similar to motors used for trimming grass.
There are different types of RC cars. On-road cars stay on smooth, paved paths. Off-road cars use special parts to drive on rough ground. They have strong suspension. Suspension is the set of parts that helps a car handle bumps.

These models used parts from Ford's own inventory, such as six-volt batteries and convertible top motors. The radio systems even operated functional headlights, brake lights, and turn signals. This allowed designers to save money and reduce the time needed to develop new car designs.
Individual inventors also made massive contributions to the hobby. In the early 1960s, Bill Johnson built a sophisticated 1:12 scale metal race car from scratch. 
Another pioneer, Chuck Eckles, developed highly detailed models in 1965. He initially built a 1:8 scale Jaguar E-Type with a stainless-steel chassis. After finding the plastic body too fragile, he created more durable vacuum-formed bodies using a plaster plug master. His redesigned Mustang model used a Cox Medallion .15 engine and reached a top speed of 35 miles per hour. The vehicle was 11 inches long and weighed 3.5 pounds. He utilized a rack and pinion steering system along with an independent front suspension to improve performance.
The transition to commercial products helped make RC cars accessible to the public. In 1955, the Japanese company Masudaya launched the "Radicon Radio Control" bus, which was marketed as the first complete radio-remote control toy.
