He was born in 1811 in the village of Terboyo. This area is near Semarang on the island of Java. He came from a noble family with Arab-Javanese roots. Saleh is often called the first modern artist from Indonesia. His work followed a style called Romanticism. This style was very popular in Europe during the nineteenth century. He used his talent to show his cultural roots and his own clever ideas.

Saleh learned to paint in many different ways. First, he studied in Bogor with the artist A.J. Payen. Payen saw his talent and helped him go to the Netherlands.

In Europe, he studied portraiture from Cornelis Kruseman. This means he learned to paint people's faces very well. He also studied landscapes from Andreas Schelfhout. Landscapes are paintings of nature and wide views. To paint animals, he even studied a real lion in The Hague. This helped him create his famous paintings of animal fights.

Saleh spent twenty years living and working in Europe. He traveled to many cities and visited Algiers. He worked at various European courts for many years. From 1839, he spent five years at the court of Ernest I. This man was the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Saleh was also the first Indonesian to join the Freemasons. In 1852, he finally returned to the Dutch East Indies.

This painting shows a Javanese leader being captured by the colonial government. Saleh made special choices to show his pride. He painted the Javanese people in accurate clothes like batik and blangkon. He also painted the captors with large heads to make them look monstrous. He wanted to show the true feelings of the event. This painting was given to King Willem III but returned to Indonesia in 1978.

Saleh's life and art still connect to the world today. His large house in Cikini is now a hospital. His famous painting is kept safely in the Merdeka Palace Museum in Jakarta. Even his grave in Bogor is a place of interest. In 1923, a man found his marble tombstones under some weeds. President Sukarno later visited the site to honor him. His story even appears in a 2022 action movie. This film is called "Stealing Raden Saleh." It follows a group trying to find his famous masterpiece.

Born in 1811 in Terboyo, near Semarang on the island of Java, he belonged to a noble Hadhrami family. His lineage included Arab-Javanese roots, with his father being Sayyid Husen bin Alwi bin Awal bin Yahya. Saleh is widely recognized as the first "modern" artist from what is now Indonesia. His artistic style aligned with nineteenth-century Romanticism, a movement popular throughout Europe. Through his work, he combined European techniques with his own cultural roots and inventiveness.

Saleh's journey into professional art began in Bogor under the Belgian artist A.J. Payen. Payen recognized the young man's talent and convinced the Dutch colonial government to fund his studies in Europe. Saleh arrived in the Netherlands in 1829 to begin formal training. He studied portraiture under Cornelis Kruseman, which allowed him to work at various European courts. He also studied landscape painting from Andreas Schelfhout. To master animal subjects, he even studied a live lion in The Hague with a tamer named Henri Martin. This specific study helped him create famous paintings of animal fights.

During his twenty years in Europe, Saleh achieved several historic milestones. In 1836, he became the first indigenous Indonesian to be initiated into Freemasonry. From 1839, he spent five years at the court of Ernest I, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. This duke served as an important patron for his work. Saleh traveled extensively, visiting many European cities and Algiers. His paintings were even exhibited at the prestigious Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Saleh returned to the Dutch East Indies in 1852 after two decades abroad. He served as a conservator for the colonial government's art collection and worked as a court painter for various Governors-General. He painted portraits of the colonial elite, including European administrators and the Javanese priyayi. He also painted the Peranakan Chinese "Cabang Atas" group. Despite his success, Saleh expressed unease about colonial life in his letters. He once noted that in the colonies, people seemed to talk only about coffee and sugar.

In his personal life, Saleh married Constancia von Mansfeld, a wealthy heiress of part-German descent. She helped finance his large country house, or landhuis, in Cikini. The architecture of this home was inspired by Callenberg Castle, which he had visited in Europe.

Much of the surrounding land was later converted into public gardens in 1862. Today, the house serves as the PGI Cikini Hospital, and the area is known as Taman Ismail Marzuki. Saleh later remarried a woman from the Yogyakarta Sultanate, Raden Ayu Danudirdja, in 1867.

One of Saleh's most significant historical works is "The Arrest of Pangeran Diponegoro," completed in 1857.

This painting depicts the 1830 capture of a Javanese leader during the Java War. Saleh created a version that differed greatly from a previous painting by Dutch artist Nicolaas Pieneman. While Pieneman's work showed the Prince as resigned, Saleh depicted him as outraged. Saleh also used specific details to express nationalism. He painted the Javanese figures in accurate batik and blangkon clothing. He deliberately gave the Dutch captors large heads to make them appear monstrous. This painting was eventually returned to Indonesia from the Netherlands in 1978.

Saleh's life ended abruptly on April 23, 1880. Although he claimed he had been poisoned by a servant, a post-mortem examination revealed a blood clot near his heart. He was buried in Bogor, an event attended by many Dutch officials and local students. In 1923, his marble tombstones were rediscovered in Bogor after being covered by weeds.

President Sukarno later ordered the restoration of the tomb. Saleh's legacy continues to influence culture, even appearing in the 2022 action film "Stealing Raden Saleh," which centers on a plot to steal his masterpiece.
